Smyge has a long-standing history of lime mining, evident in the many local building facades coated in rich white lime powder. Today we see remnants of this history in the defunct limestone kilns spread across the vast landscape of Östra Torp. Entering one of those kilns is a spiritual experience, with the light pourin down the large ceiling dome. We wanted to capture the essence of this spatial experience that we shared as a group and express it through our shelter. The shape of the shelter is symbolic. It’s a cocoon: nurturing and life-giving. Inside this cocoon, you will experience warmth and safety, whilst being visually connected to nature and the rich history of the landscape it overlooks. The verticality of the space is emphasized by the structural arches that meet at the top, complemented by cedar shingles that enclose the structure.
